200223 Whatever

A continuing performative installation first documented at Serlachius on 23 February 2020. Its embodiments are successive realizations of one Work. Each realization occupies a vacancy whose identity survives the disappearance of its occupant. The Work persists through position, not through one stable form.

Authorial Comment

Art is what the artist creates. The artist is the one who creates art. They actualize one another in the artistic act, leaving behind an object that occupies a place. Thus, the artist exists only while performing the artistic act and disappears when the act is over: the work remains. In this work, empty shoes occupy the empty place established by the artistic act. In other words, the artist is present here by being absent.

“No, the place does exist, in fact! The artist does not. But he occupies it.”
